My professional teaching journey began over 20 years ago. Since then, I have taught 100s of students and coached 100s of teachers–all the while refining an expert approach to teaching that is enjoyable and effective.

I have applied these proven strategies in various contexts as a classroom teacher, university professor, instructional leader, and now…homeschool mom.

As a classroom teacher, I refined systems to balance instructional excellence and practical organization. It’s no secret that the same skills are essential to managing the controlled chaos of the home while homeschooling.

Earning a doctorate taught me the rhythm of research and reflection–to constantly pursue the why behind every instructional choice. I teach this same discipline with simplicity to homeschool moms so that they can have immense certainty in the countless decisions they make each day about the learning journey for their children.

As a university professor, I love teaching young and not-so-young adults the disciplines that support expert teaching and protect against burn out. Such habits are also a requirement for walking through the homeschool journey with enjoyment and confidence.

As a researcher, I explore the intersection of teaching, artistry, and expertise. I have studied the teaching and learning relationship for over a decade to discover that the most excellent teachers engage in steady, relational give-and-take during instruction–like a dance. No other context supports the truth of such expert teaching like the homeschool context.

One of my favorite professional experiences was as the Director of Instructional Effectiveness at one of the nation’s largest private, Christian high schools. My role included implementing a framework for measuring and growing teacher effectivess. In working with teachers, I designed a simple system for developing expertise one tiny step at a time. This is the same approach I have to maintaining excellence in my own homeschool experience and coaching other moms to sustainable homeschool success.

While the director, I also led the creation of a school-wide curriculum. The guiding principles for the design were centered on objectives that were easy to measure yet challenged students toward critical, real-world thinking. Each lesson objective was aligned with the overall goal of helping students achieve the disciplines and character that support successful, adult, Christian life. The principles I’ve used for years as a professional educator can be translated to the homeschool context to promote freedom, confidence, effectiveness, and enjoyment.
